Senior barrister apologizes for AI-made quotes in a murder case

In Victoria's Supreme Court, defense lawyers for a teenager charged with murder filed submissions made with AI. They included invented quotes from a speech to the state parliament and Supreme Court cases that do not exist. The judge's staff could not find the cases and asked for copies. The defense then admitted the errors. Prosecutors had received the submissions without checking them and based their own on them. Revised versions cited legislation that did not exist. The lead barrister, a King's Counsel, took full responsibility and apologized. The case ran 24 hours late. Justice James Elliott said AI output must be independently and thoroughly verified.
