UK tribunal strikes off a lawyer over an AI-drafted defense

A registered foreign lawyer in England faced a Solicitors Regulation Authority case after a 2024 conviction for employing a person barred from working. He used generative AI to draft his answer to the regulator. The regulator's counsel found wrong quotations and citations that did not support the points made. His reply admitting the AI use was also drafted with AI and held more false material. The Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal removed him from the register in its first case on AI hallucinations. It said the conviction or the AI misuse alone would have justified removal. It rated his culpability for the AI errors very high. The regulator did not seek costs because he could not pay.
