Apology to the judge

Sullivan & Cromwell apologizes for AI-made citations in a filing

Sullivan & Cromwell represents the liquidators of the Prince group, whose owner US prosecutors indicted over an alleged scam compound in Cambodia. On April 9, 2026, the firm filed an emergency motion in New York's federal bankruptcy court. It contained fabricated case citations, misquoted authorities and other errors, some produced by AI tools. Lawyers at Boies Schiller Flexner flagged the problems. On April 18, a co-head of the firm's restructuring practice apologized to Chief Judge Martin Glenn. He said the firm's rules require checking all AI output, but they were not followed. The firm filed a corrected motion with a redline and a list of dozens of fixes, and re-reviewed its other filings in the matter.
