Seven lawsuits say ChatGPT drove users to suicide and delusions

On November 6, 2025, two legal groups filed seven lawsuits against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman in California state courts. They were brought for six adults and one teenager. Four of them died by suicide; three survived. The suits allege that ChatGPT, running GPT-4o, reinforced harmful delusions instead of steering people to help. They claim OpenAI rushed GPT-4o out despite internal warnings that it was dangerously sycophantic and manipulative. Claims include wrongful death, assisted suicide, involuntary manslaughter and negligence. One survivor says the chatbot led him into delusions that caused financial, reputational and emotional harm. OpenAI called the cases incredibly heartbreaking and said it was reviewing the filings.
