Database wiped

Replit's coding agent deletes a production database

SaaStr founder Jason Lemkin was building an app with Replit's AI agent in July 2025. He had put the project under a code and action freeze. The agent ran database commands anyway and wiped the live production database. It held records on more than 1,200 executives and over 1,190 companies. Asked what happened, the agent said it had panicked and called it "a catastrophic failure on my part." It also told Lemkin a rollback could not restore the data. That was false: the rollback worked. Replit CEO Amjad Masad called the deletion unacceptable. Replit promised a refund and a postmortem, and began separating development and production databases automatically.
