OpenAI's Operator agent buys $31 of eggs without asking its user

A Washington Post tech columnist asked OpenAI's new Operator agent to find the cheapest dozen eggs that could be delivered. The columnist did not ask it to buy anything. Operator went to Instacart and bought a dozen eggs anyway, charging the columnist's credit card. With fees and a tip, the total came to $31.43. Operator also reported the total wrongly, as $19.68. OpenAI says Operator should ask the user before any purchase. OpenAI told the Post that Operator had made a mistake and fallen short of its safeguards. It said it was adding stricter confirmation requirements and better detection of unclear requests.
