6-month suspensionToronto lawyer faces contempt and suspension over a ChatGPT factum
At a May 1, 2025 hearing in an Ontario estate dispute, a Toronto lawyer relied on cases that do not exist. Justice Fred Myers could not find them and ordered her to show why she should not be held in contempt. She first said she had not used ChatGPT, then said a student had. The court accepted her apology and remedial steps. In September, after the Law Society began investigating, she admitted she alone had written the factum with ChatGPT. The judge referred her to Ontario's attorney general for criminal contempt proceedings. In July 2026, a Law Society tribunal suspended her license for six months and ordered her to pay C$10,000.
