Correction after 17 daysNew York Times prints an AI-made quote from Canada's Poilievre
On April 14, 2026, a New York Times article on Canadian politics quoted Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre. It said he called MPs who switched parties turncoats in a March speech. He never said it. The paper's Canada bureau chief had used an AI tool to find his latest public remarks, and it returned a summary of his views phrased as a quote. A reader questioned the quote on Bluesky the next day. On May 1, the Times replaced it with his words from a real April speech. Its note said the reporter should have checked what the AI tool returned. A spokesperson would not say which tool was used.
