Mediahuis suspends a senior journalist over AI-invented quotes

A former chief executive of Mediahuis Ireland had become the media group's first Journalism and Society fellow. In March 2026, the Dutch daily NRC reported made-up quotes in 15 of 53 pieces he had written. Seven people said they never said the words attributed to them. He said he had summarized reports with ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's NotebookLM and trusted the summaries. He admitted he had put words into people's mouths when he should have paraphrased them. Mediahuis chief executive Gert Ysebaert said it should never have happened. The company suspended him from the fellowship.
