$3,000 sanctionLawyer fined over ChatGPT and Claude citations; expert report tossed
A plaintiff sued supplement maker Outliers, which sells as Thesis, in federal court in Tacoma, Washington. Her lawyer's filings and two expert reports contained dozens of inaccurate legal and factual citations. The lawyer told the court she had used ChatGPT and Claude to draft her submissions and had not reviewed their output. On July 24, 2026, the court fined her $3,000 personally and required her to certify that she had checked every citation in future filings. On August 18, it excluded an expert report whose citations to academic articles were AI-made, saying they shattered the expert's credibility. In the same order it granted summary judgment and dismissed the remaining claims with prejudice.
