LA Times AI feature adds a softened view of the KKK to a column

On March 3, 2025, the Los Angeles Times began adding an AI feature called Insights to opinion pieces. It offered AI-written takes on each piece, including opposing views. One appeared under a column about Anaheim recalling its Ku Klux Klan city council a century earlier. The AI's counterpoint said some local accounts framed the 1920s Klan as a response to social change rather than a hate movement. A New York Times reporter posted a screenshot on Bluesky. By the next day, the feature was gone from the column. The paper did not publicly address the note at the time. In an April meeting, its managing editor said nobody had been a big fan of the tool.
