13-hour outageAmazon's Kiro coding agent is tied to a 13-hour AWS outage
In December 2025, AWS Cost Explorer went down for about 13 hours in one region, mainly affecting China. The Financial Times later reported, citing four people, that engineers had let Kiro, Amazon's AI coding agent, make changes. The agent reportedly decided to delete and recreate the environment, causing the outage. Amazon disputed the report. It said the cause was user error, a role with broader permissions than expected, and that AI's involvement was a coincidence. It said only one service in one of its 39 regions was affected and no customers asked about it. Amazon added safeguards, including mandatory peer review for production access.
