Public apologyKBS's AI subtitles turn a NASA launch term into a slur
On April 2, 2026, Korean time, broadcaster KBS streamed NASA's Artemis II launch on YouTube with AI-generated Korean subtitles. Mission control called out the rocket's pitch maneuver. The AI misheard 'pitch' as a similar-sounding English slur for women. It showed the Korean equivalent on screen. A screenshot spread widely on social media. KBS apologized on its YouTube channel. It replaced the caption in the archived stream with a phonetic spelling of the word. It said it was working with relevant departments to better block offensive language in AI captions.
