ICE's AI resume screener mislabels recruits as police veterans

During its 2025 hiring surge, ICE used an AI tool to scan resumes for law enforcement experience. Recruits with that experience took a four-week online course instead of an eight-week academy in Georgia. The tool treated any resume containing the word "officer" as police experience. That included a compliance officer and people who wrote that they hoped to become ICE officers. NBC News reported that many recruits went to field offices without proper training. ICE found the error in the fall and reviewed resumes by hand. About 200 hires were sent back for full training, DHS said. It called the problem a technological snag.
