Gordon Rees repays $55,000 in fees over AI-made bankruptcy filings

A lawyer at Gordon Rees Scully Mansukhani represented a creditor in the Alabama bankruptcy of Jackson Hospital & Clinic. Her motion was full of citations that did not exist, did not contain the quoted words, or did not support her points. A later brief clung to them and even recycled a fabricated quote. She said she had not used AI herself but knew someone outside the firm had. Gordon Rees voluntarily paid more than $55,000 of the other side's legal fees. On November 20, 2025, Judge Christopher Hawkins publicly reprimanded the lawyer, who had left the firm. He declined to sanction Gordon Rees, citing its remediation, but ordered it to share the opinion and its updated AI policies with its lawyers.
