Google pulls Gemma after it invents an accusation against a senator

Asked whether Senator Marsha Blackburn had been accused of rape, Google's Gemma model made up a story. It claimed a state trooper had accused her during a 1987 campaign and cited news links as support. Blackburn said none of it was true, the campaign year was wrong, and the links led to error pages or unrelated stories. In a letter to Google's CEO, she called it defamation, not a harmless hallucination. Google then removed Gemma from AI Studio, its web tool for developers. It said Gemma was never meant as a consumer tool for factual questions. The models stayed available through Google's API.
