Google sued after AI Overviews invent a lawsuit against a firm

Wolf River Electric is a solar installer in Minnesota. Its complaint says that in September 2024, staff found Google search results stating the state attorney general was suing the company over deceptive sales. Google's AI Overview cited four sources. According to the complaint, none of them named Wolf River. The attorney general had sued other solar companies. In March 2025, Wolf River sued Google for defamation in Ramsey County. It says customers cancelled contracts worth up to $150,000. It puts its losses at $110 million to $210 million. Google said mistakes can happen with new technology and it acted quickly to fix the problem. In January 2026, a federal judge sent the case back to state court.
