Trial order vacatedGeorgia prosecutor's AI citations void a ruling in a murder case
A Georgia woman serving life for murder asked for a new trial. The assistant district attorney opposing her filed briefs citing cases that do not exist or do not say what was claimed. She also largely drafted the order the trial judge used in September 2025 to deny the motion. That order contained nine such citations. After oral argument, the Georgia Supreme Court demanded an explanation. The prosecutor admitted she had used AI software and not verified its citations. On May 5, 2026, the court vacated the order and told the trial judge to write a new one without either side's lawyers. It suspended the prosecutor from practicing before it for six months and admonished her office.
