$8,000 fineGeorgia judge doubles a lawyer's fine for lying about AI use
In a lawsuit against grocery chain Kroger in federal court in Atlanta, the plaintiff's lawyer filed briefs citing fake cases and misstating real ones. Kroger's lawyers were the first to raise concerns that he had relied on AI tools. At a hearing, the judge asked him whether he had used artificial intelligence, and he said he had not. In his written response, he claimed not to understand which cases the court had asked about. On August 28, 2026, the court found he had repeatedly lied. It fined him $1,000 for each of the four worst fake or misleading authorities, then doubled the total to $8,000. It also ordered him to document the ethics and technology training he said he had taken.
