Georgia appeals court voids a divorce ruling that cited fake cases

A woman asked a Georgia trial court to reopen her divorce, saying she was never properly served. The judge denied her petition in an order that cited two cases that do not exist. The order appeared to have been prepared by her husband's lawyer, who had cited the same fake cases. On appeal, that lawyer's brief went further: 11 of its 15 citations were invented or irrelevant, one backing a request for attorney fees. The Court of Appeals said the filings suggested generative AI had been used. On June 30, 2025, it vacated the order, sent the case back for a new hearing, and fined the lawyer $2,500, the most its rules allow.
