2 rulings withdrawnTwo US judges withdraw rulings with AI-invented quotes and parties
On June 30, 2025, a federal judge in New Jersey issued an opinion denying a motion to dismiss. It misstated case outcomes and included made-up quotes from court opinions and the defendants. On July 20, a federal judge in Mississippi issued a temporary restraining order. It named parties, allegations and declarations that were not in the case. Lawyers flagged the errors, and both judges withdrew and replaced the rulings. In letters released October 23 after questions from Senator Chuck Grassley, Judge Julien Neals said a law school intern had used ChatGPT. Judge Henry Wingate said a law clerk had used Perplexity. Neals put his AI ban in writing. Wingate now requires a second review and printouts of cited cases.
