Two fake cases cited

UK prosecutors cite two nonexistent cases in extradition appeals

The Crown Prosecution Service opposed two people's appeals against extradition to Romania in England's High Court. Its written grounds cited two legal authorities that do not exist. A junior lawyer on the same side later repeated the citations in another document. Lawyers for both sides flagged the cases before the hearing. In a letter dated March 3, 2026, the CPS conceded the citations were wrong and probably came from AI. It blamed a reviewing lawyer's failure to check them. The judge recorded the episode in his judgment and warned of the dangers of unsupervised AI in legal research. He accepted the CPS's apology and dismissed both appeals.
