Connecticut's top court sanctions lawyer after ChatGPT altered cites

A Connecticut lawyer researched two public interest appeals on LexisNexis and checked every citation. He then pasted the drafts into ChatGPT to improve the writing. Without his noticing, ChatGPT added new case citations and changed existing ones. About seven erroneous citations reached the state Supreme Court in applications and briefs. Lawyers for amici curiae spotted them, and he filed corrections. On July 31, 2026, the court found he had breached his duty of competence, though not on purpose. It ordered six extra hours of legal education, three of them on generative AI. He and his firm must each donate $1,000 for ethics training. It was the first such case the court had faced.
