Claude Code's Terraform run wipes DataTalks.Club's production setup

DataTalks.Club's founder used Claude Code to move a side project's website onto the AWS setup that ran his course platform. The agent had advised keeping them separate. The current Terraform state file was on his old laptop, so a run created duplicate resources. Asked to clean those up, the agent unpacked an old archive he had given it, replacing the state with one describing the live platform. It then ran a destroy command. The database, network, servers and automated snapshots were deleted, with 2.5 years of student homework and projects. AWS support found a snapshot he couldn't see and restored it about a day later. The founder blamed himself and no longer lets agents run commands.
