Berlingske's AI tool invents experts and quotes in a news story

In May 2026, the Danish daily Berlingske published a story on an economic advisory council report about protecting drinking water. It quoted three experts. Two could not be found at the universities named. The third, a real researcher, had never spoken to the paper. A journalist had asked an internal AI tool to condense expert comments from an earlier article, but that article was never fed into the tool. The tool made up people and quotes. A reporter at the newspaper Information alerted Berlingske. The paper corrected the story and suspended the journalist. Editor-in-chief Tom Jensen said the case hurt its reputation and credibility. An outside review later found no other AI errors.
