Apple pauses AI news alerts after false BBC summaries

Apple Intelligence can shorten a stack of app notifications into one summary. In December 2024 it summarized BBC News alerts with a claim the BBC never made. It said the suspect in a US murder case had shot himself. The BBC complained. More false BBC summaries followed. One said a darts player had won a final before it was played. Apple first said the feature was in beta and promised clearer labels. On January 16, 2025 its developer betas switched off summaries for news and entertainment apps. Summaries of other apps now appear in italics. Apple said news summaries would return after improvements.
